Fruit Not Fat {Galaxy Granola Giveaway}

It is important to start each day off right.  Wake up, take a shower, put on fresh, clean clothes, and brush your teeth.  One thing that often gets over looked is a healthy breakfast.

In fact, research had shown that “teens and adolescents who eat breakfast every day are less likely to become overweight or obese in the near future and they typically lead a more active, healthier lifestyle than their peers who skip breakfast.”  “In the last twenty years, obesity in children has doubled and tripled for adolescents. Estimates are that as many as 12% to 24% of children and adolescents skip breakfast on a regular basis.” source

When I eat breakfast I feel that I don’t munch on junk throughout the day.  I find that I also don’t get so ornery on a bad day when I have breakfast than when I don’t.

Bottom line, breakfast really is the most important meal of the day.

So if it is the most important meal of the day, why fill it with fatty and high in sugar foods?  Start your day right with a good, healthy breakfast.  Galaxy Granola, makes great tasting and healthy granola.  Their granola is baked in applesauce not fatty oils.  Doing this makes their granola 70% less fattening than the competitors granola, including Bear Naked and Nature’s Path.  It is made with all natural ingredients.

Look at the nutritional facts.  They speak for themselves!!

Galaxy Granola retails for $5.49 a bag and is available at Whole Foods nationwide, health food stores and starting this month Safeways nationwide.  Galaxy Granola comes in several delicious granola flavors including: Maple Pecan Quinoa, Hint of Honey, Not Sweet Vanilla, Cranberry Orange, Raspberry, and Vanilla Almond.

I received one 12 oz. bag  Not Sweet Vanilla, Cranberry Orange, Raspberry, and Vanilla Almond.  Both my husband and I tried each flavor.  His favorite was “either Cranberry Orange or Not Sweet Vanilla.”  My favorite was “either Raspberry or Vanilla Almond.”  Based on our scientific research all four flavors are delicious! :)   We ate ours with milk but it would have also been very delicious with a flavored yogurt!! In fact, I think I will have that for my healthy breakfast tomorrow morning!

Today, Galaxy Granola is giving two lucky people…

2 bags of Galaxy Granola!!

Sharing 10 Ways Of Making Your Favorite Foods Healthier

With my pregnancy I have really gotten into some bad eating habits. When I crave something I just have to have it. I know you know what I am talking about if you have been or are pregnant right now. Weight Watchers and Twitter Moms recently gave us the task of looking at what we eat and thinking of ways that we can make it healthier. So we don’t have to cut it out completely just try to make it better.

Here are my top 10 11 foods that I/We eat regularly and ways I can make them better for me and my family:

1) CHOCOLATE-I have to admit this is my number one weakness when it comes to food. I just love Chocolate anything. One way I could make it healthier would be to opt for Dark Chocolate instead of Milk Chocolate. I think I could handle that. :)

2) PIZZA-This seems to be a staple in our home. One way I could recreate it to make it healthier for my family would be to opt for a thin crust, or a de-lite pizza with fewer calories. We could even make homemade pizza instead of frozen which would save money and calories I am sure.

3) SODA-My hubby is the bad one when it comes to sugar drinks. He just has to have his Mt. Dew everyday. I recently gave him some other options like Cran-Apple Juice and Pepsi One and he is limiting his Sugar intake with each drink. Another thing is replacing a glass of soda with a glass of water. Water is so good for us…we need to drink more of it on a daily basis.

4) SALT-Every night at dinner we put the salt on the table. It’s become such a habit I didn’t even realize it until last night. We then proceed to dump salt on everything. So guess what? No more salt on the table. We are going to start tasting our food first and then if it needs a little salt we can get up and walk to the cupboard and get it.

5) ICE CREAM-You scream, I scream, We all scream for ICE CREAM. We love our Ice Cream that’s for sure. One way we can be healthier is opting for frozen yogurt, or even low calorie ice creams.

6) MILK-By simply moving down the scale of milk fat to 1% Milk we can be healthier. As simple as that.

7) PASTA-We tend to eat a lot of spaghetti and pasta on a weekly basis. By switching to Whole Grain Pasta we are eating so much better.

8) VEGGIES-First off we don’t eat nearly enough vegetables at the dinner table so more would be better. But a way to make them healthier would be to use little/to no butter on them. I love butter but I can definitely do without as much in my diet.

9) FRIED FOODS-A great way to eat healthier is to cut out fried foods all together. We can simply grill our chicken and fish instead of putting it in grease and frying it up. Such an easy transition and so much better for us.

10) MEATS-I have wanted to cut back on meats for quite sometime now. My hubby is a meat and potato man so we tend to have meat almost every night. I am going to implement a Vegetarian night once a week to help us not take in as much fat that is in the meats we eat. Plus we can opt for leaner hamburger instead of the regular 80/20.

11) BREADS-We are a white bread family, but recently I found out their is a white bread at the super market that is whole grain. So we have switched to it!

I Can Eat All By Myself! {Little Grips Review}

Have you ever noticed how difficult it can be for your toddler to maneuver their current eating utensil? Are they able to get the food on the fork or spoon but then drop most of it before it reaches their mouth?

WHY?

The current toddler utensils are not designed for the natural movement of your child’s hand or wrist.

That’s why we invented “Little Grips for Little Hands!” An eating utensil designed just for toddlers.

I was very excited when we were given the chance to review Little Grips eating utensil’s. My little guy has really struggled with the regular fork and spoon. I was super impressed when they arrived. I quickly set them out at lunch and let my little guy’s curiosity take hold. He picked them up and instantly was using them to eat. He was actually getting all the food to his mouth instead of all over the place. I can also see the accomplishment look on his face when he eats. The gripping on them is very nice and makes holding them a breeze. Now he uses them at every meal. I highly recommend Little Grips if you have a toddler.

Check out this video of Little Grips:

You can purchase your own Little Grips online, & keep up with them on Twitter and Facebook.

Real Moms Real Views DIY: Home Grown Baking

As the summer is beginning to come to an end, now is the time for all the fruits and veggies you planted in your garden to be picked and devoured.  One thing that seems to come in never ending amounts is zucchini.  Surely you can’t eat zucchini EVERY night for dinner, so here are two ways you can use this delicious veggie.

Chocolate Zucchini Bread

2 squares (1 oz.) unsweetened chocolate
3 eggs
2 cups white sugar
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups grated zucchini
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup sour cream
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
2 tablespoons cocoa

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease two 9×5 inch loaf pans.

Step 1: In a microwave-safe bowl, microwave chocolate squares until melted. Stir occasionally until chocolate is smooth.

When I went to stir after 20 seconds, I quickly learned this bowl IS NOT microwave-safe. OUCH!

Switched bowls and melted chocolate.

Step 2: In a large bowl, combine eggs, sugar, oil, zucchini, sour cream, vanilla and melted chocolate; beat well.

Wet ingredients…check!

Step 3: Stir in the flour, baking soda, salt, cocoa, and cinnamon.

Action shot!

Step 4: Fold in chocolate chips. Pour batter into prepared loaf pans. Bake for 60-70 min, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean.

Now wait…..(wonder what is in the fridge to tie me over)

TA DA! Beautiful!

Cool for 30 minutes before removing from pan so you don’t lose the bottom of your bread!  Finish cooling on cooling racks.  Eat and enjoy!

Hawaiian Zucchini Bread

3 eggs, beaten
2 cups white sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup vegetable oil
2 cups gated zucchini
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup crushed pineapple, drained
1/2 cup coconut

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Lightly grease two 9×5 inch loaf pans.

Step 1: In a large bowl mix together eggs, sugar, vanilla, oil, and zucchini. (I decided to do 1 cup sugar and 1 cup splenda to help cut down on the calories in case I end up eating both loaves. :) )
Step 2: In a separate bowl, mix together flour, soda, baking powder, and salt.  Add to the zucchini batter and mix well.

Another action shot!

Step 3: Stir in pecans, pineapple, and coconut. Pour into loaf pans. Bake for 1 hour, or until browned. (It only took mine 50 minutes).

Waiting…and snacking…

WA LA! Nice and browned!

Let cool in pan for 30 minutes before removing.  Finish cooling on cooling racks. Eat and enjoy!

Yummy In My Tummy {South Ridge Farms Giveaway} CLOSED

One thing I love about summer is having fresh vegetables and fruit!  I am addicted!  Watermelon, melons, corn, tomatoes, peaches, pears, plums, cucumbers…my mouth is watering!

Believe it or not, Utah is a farming state.  When settlers came to Utah many years ago survival and self suffienecy became a way of life.  In the early 1900’s the Rowley family was one of the first families to become commercial fruit growers in Utah...South Ridge Farms.  They planted some of the first “sour cherries”.  Now three generations later not only are they still growing cherries, they grow apples, berries, pears, pumpkins, squash, gourds, and corn!

Around my neck of the woods people call South Ridge Farms, The Red Barn or Big Red Barn.  They are famous for their fresh fruit and ICE CREAM!  (Ice cream is the main staple of my food pyramid…any one second that?) I would love to taste of of everything they make…okay who am I kidding…I couldn’t just stop at one!

I love supporting locally grown and locally operated companies.  That is why I was so excited to be asked to review South Ridge Farms product.  They generously sent me a box full of delicious goodies.

I got the chance to try the (from left to right) strawberry and peach salsa, pumpkin butter, golden apple butter, dried cherries, and apricot jam.  Don’t they sound divine!?  THEY ARE!  In fact they are so good I was fighting my husband for them.

Imagine this…strawberry and peach salsa over a grilled chicken breast.  Oh how about this…white chocolate macadamia cherry cookies.  YUM!  I loved this product.  So fresh and oh so amazing!  Their products would make the perfect gift—birthday, Christmas, housewarming, host/hostess gift, or just thinking about you.  Don’t believe me?  Send something my way and I will let you know how much I loved it ;)

Today South Ridge Farms is giving one lucky winner…

Brew Over Ice! {Keurig French Vanilla K-Cups Review}

This isn’t your every day vanilla. When we developed this lusciously smooth flavor, we were shooting for something sophisticated. More crème brulee than candy. A rich, custardy vanilla that’s deep, exotic, and geared for grownup tastes. Now you can enjoy this richly satisfying flavor as an iced coffee, brewed at the touch of a button.

Have you heard of the NEW k-cups Brew Over Ice? If not you must check them out. Green Mountain Coffee sent me a box of “French Vanilla Iced Coffee” to test out and can I just say YUM! I am a big fan of french vanilla flavored anything so when these arrived I was very excited. The process is simple. Simply use them in your Keurig coffee maker just as you would to make regular coffee with your k-cups, but instead you place your glass underneath filled with ice! You have an instant iced coffee!

They even have a brew over ice tumbler that would compliment use with your k-cups very nicely!

They have so many different flavors including: Sweet Raspberry Black Tea, Sweet Peach Black Tea, French Vanilla Iced Coffee, & Sweet Raspberry Black Tea.

Yummy….Delicious….Brew Over Ice!

You can purchase your own Brew Over Ice k-cups online at Green Mountain Coffee.

  • Nature’s Hand Granola doesn’t contain any artificial ingredients. It is naturally sweetened with brown sugar and honey.

I received several different Nature’s Hand Granola flavors to try out. It has been a great way to add some whole grain to my family’s diet, but we like it because it’s crunchy and yummy. Our favorite way to eat Nature’s Hand Granola is to sprinkle some over ice cream, yogurt and oatmeal. I have also tried their recipes for making chocolate chip cookies…what a great way to indulge! They’ve got a list of other recipes, and you can even submit your own if you come up with something good that you’d like to share!

Nature’s Hand Granola comes in six flavors…my favorite is Raisin Hazelnut. You can purchase it for $4.99 for a big bag right off their website, or 12 bags in any combo of flavors for $53.89 (10% off). Check their store locator to see if you can purchase locally.

Are You Ready? {The Ready Store Review}

If you have seen my posts in the past you know that I am trying to get my families food storage stocked up. I have been doing OK over the last year, let’s just say I can always do better :) I seem to have the everyday essentials on hand, but I am really lacking on the long term essentials like powdered milk, canned goods, and grains that I would not be able to get a hold of if an emergency came to. The Ready Store recently contacted me to review their products and I was very excited. Anytime I can contribute to my food storage I am all for it. Since I have always been a little iffy about trying the #10 can goods this was the perfect opportunity. Did you know that these cans have a shelf life of up to 30 years. WOW, that is awesome. The Ready Store’s customer service was wonderful and my package arrived very quickly and included the following: Saratoga Farms Cinnamon Apple Slices, Saratoga Farms Chicken Gravy, Mountain House Beef Stroganoff with Noodles, MRE individual meal, a small first aid kit, and a flashlight/radio. I was supper impressed with everything. Every item was packaged to last for years and that is just what you want with your food storage. Our favorite was the Saratoga Farms Cinnamon Apple Slices. They tasted so yummy. I loved that they are healthy and delicious. My little one loved them and he ate them as a snack everyday. I shared them will all of our extended family and everyone LOVED them and commented on how great their taste was! Another item that I highly recommend is the Saratoga Farms Chicken Gravy. We are a big gravy family so we were easily able to try this out on mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, and chicken. It was delicious. You would never know it was “food storage”. I am planning on purchasing a lot more #10 goods from The Ready Store to help me and my family stay prepared should the need ever arise. You simply must check them out!

You can purchase your own food storage items at The Ready Store online and have them shipped right to your door!

Follow them on their Blog, Twitter and Facebook!

Don’t forget to sign up for their email newsletter and stay up to date on specials, new products, and more!
