5 Warning Signs That You Need an AC Repair

The summer heat in most states can be nearly unbearable. The one thing that gets us through excessively hot days is our nice, cool homes.

But what if your AC unit wasn’t working? Can you imagine how uncomfortable you would be if you didn’t have a way to cool your home?

For this reason, it’s a good idea to keep an eye out for the early warning signs that your HVAC unit might be in need of AC repairs. Catching a problem early can help save you a lot of money. Just as importantly, it can help you avoid being miserable in your own home.

Keep reading for the top five signs that you need to call an AC repair service.

1. Your AC Unit isn’t Pushing Out Cold Air

One of the most common signs of a failing AC unit is when it no longer cools the air coming through your vents. The fans and blowers still work, but the air coming through is room temperature at best. On especially hot days, the air will even feel warm.

In this case, there’s probably something wrong with the air compressor or the refrigerant.

2. Your AC Unit is Making Unusual Noises

You might need to call an AC repair company if your AC unit is making strange noises. This could indicate a problem with a fan belt or the motor.

Conversely, your AC unit could be making clicking noises but failing to turn on. In this case, there’s probably something wrong with the electrical components of the AC unit.

3. Your Energy Bills Are Higher Than They Should Be

Have you noticed a spike in your electric bill? We generally use more energy during the summer simply because we’re running our AC units. However, you should have a pretty good idea of what your energy bill should look like based on previous summers.

If your bill is way higher than it should be, it might be time to get your HVAC checked out

4. The Air Coming Through Your Vents Has a Weird Odor

Air conditioning repair might be in your future if the air coming through your vents is carrying an unusual or unpleasant odor. If it smells like burning electrical components, that’s probably what it is. In this case, turn off your AC unit immediately and call an HVAC service for air conditioner maintenance.

If the odor smells more like mold or mildew, we also recommend turning the AC off. Certain types of mold can be harmful when inhaled. There’s likely a mold buildup somewhere in your system.

5. Your AC Unit is Old

Finally, you might need AC repair if your HVAC unit is severely outdated. If you fall into this category, it might be time to simply replace the entire HVAC system. Though it can be expensive, new units are safer, more efficient, and easier to maintain.

We recommend looking into a new HVAC unit if your current HVAC system or any of its components are 10 years old or older.

Do You Need AC Repair?

If you’re experiencing any of the issues listed above, it’s more than likely that you need AC repair. Contact an HVAC specialist in your area immediately and turn off your AC unit until you know it’s safe to run it again.
