1. Lightly Sand Walls
We recommend that you inspect the condition of your walls before starting your interior painting. There may be rough bumps and ridges on the wall depending on its style, if it has texture underneath the paint or what it’s been through. We recommend using fine-grit paper to sand the wall before painting to remove any sharp edges. You don’t have to remove all the texture if it is under paint. Just smooth it out.
2. Thoroughly Clean the Walls Before Painting
We suggest that you give your walls a good scrub while you are examining their condition. Over the years, walls accumulate a surprising amount dirt, oil, and slime from dust and sticky fingers.
Some homeowners think that they can simply paint over dirt and grime in an house interior painting project. This will cause the paint to chip or peel. For areas that are slightly dirty, we recommend a mild soap. A hard-core cleaner is recommended for stubborn grime. Don’t forget to remove any dust that has accumulated on the walls after sanding. Allow your walls to dry completely before you paint.
3. Lay out a Cotton Drop Cloth
Cotton drop cloths are a thick, blanket-like material that is used to protect floors from paint splatters and spills. Many homeowners opt for thin plastic sheets but they aren’t as effective. These thin plastic sheets can bunch up and slide, exposing your floor. It is also easy for painter’s feet to become tangled, causing them to fall. These plastic sheets are also not recyclable. This is a lot plastic for a single-use product. We recommend that if you plan to paint the interior of your house again, you spend $20-$50 for a quality drop cloth you can reuse again and again.
4. Wear Work Clothes
While you paint, you will get some paint on your skin. No matter how careful you are or how good you are at painting, it will still happen. It is for this reason that most painters wear overalls, aprons or “work clothing” they do not care about. Interior paint can be removed from your skin or hair, but it’s unlikely that you can remove it from your clothes. Wear clothes that you’re willing to get dirty before mixing paint!
5. Combine all the paint together
Mix all the paint before you begin. Even though you bought four cans in the same color, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are identical. Mixing all of the paint will ensure that the interior painting is uniform throughout.
6. Trim the Trim
Trim is the first thing you should tackle when tackling your house interior painting project. Begin by painting the trim, then finish the edgework. By painting the trim first, you can avoid accidentally hitting the wall. Cover the trim and adjacent 3 to 6 inch with tape after it is completely dry.
7. Paint a grid pattern on the ceiling
We recommend that you paint the interior of your house from top to bottom, starting with the ceiling. Grids are the best way to paint a ceiling. Paint three to six square feet at a given time. This will ensure that the edges are wet and allow you to move seamlessly to the next section.
8. Walls can be painted using a W-V or cut-in technique
Use a paint roller and the W or V technique to ensure an even paint application on walls. You apply paint in a W-shaped or V-shaped pattern, and then fill in any remaining vertical space by using a roller.
You can paint corners, areas near light switches, trims, and doors with a brush if you have confidence in your painting abilities and a steady hand. You can use less painter’s tap if you master the Cut-In technique. If you are new to paint or have a slight shake in your hand, this is not the technique for you.
9. Remove the painter’s tape before the paint dries
If you didn’t use the Cut-In Technique to protect trim or other wall components, you have probably used a lot of painter tape. Knowing when to remove tape is a critical part of ensuring high quality interior house painting. Remove the tape gently just before it dries. This will prevent dripping and ensure that no paint residue is left behind.
