Real Moms DIY: Hands & Feet To Keep

Today’s great DIY project comes from the wonderful Michelle at Fun on a Dime! Make sure you head over and become a google follower or subscribe to her emails as she posts great projects that won’t break the bank!

Hands & Feet To Keep!

We made these while we were discussing hands and feet, but I think they would make a great present for any mom, dad, or grandparent or great as a keepsake! Super easy to make and the kids had fun decorating them after they dried.

What You Need:

  • 2 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. salt
  • 3/4 c. warm water
  • Large bowl
  • Mixing spoon
  • Baking Sheet
  • Rolling pin or solid cup (I prefer the cup to the rolling pin)
  • Food coloring (optional)

**makes enough for one foot and hand print together or two separate hand/footprints

Directions:

Step 1: Mix ingredients together in a bowl. If the dough is a little dry add water a little at a time. **optional** Mix in food coloring to color the dough.

Step 2: Make a ball of dough, then flatten it to about a one-inch thickness in the shape of a circle. I recommend sticking to the 1 inch thickness. I tried to do less than an inch thick and once the hand/foot prints were finished, it was very thin on the bottom.

Step 3: Place the dough on a baking sheet, if you have not already. Put the baking sheet on a hard surface like a tile floor or pavement. Press the hand and/or foot into the dough to make an imprint. I pressed on every toe and finger and made sure their palm/heel got a good push into the dough.

Step 4: If you want to add a name or a date, the easiest way is to use a toothpick and poke words/date in with many little dots. I tried a few different ways (knifes and dragging the toothpick) and it just kept tearing the dough. (see below picture)

Step 5: Bake at 325 degrees in the oven until hard or let it air dry a couple of days. Once baked, it comes off the pan easily. I recommend baking. I baked one of them right away and let the other two air dry. The one I left in the oven I finally took it out after 30 min and let air dry the rest of the way (it probably could have baked another 10-15 min). The other  two started to color oddly and stick to the pan while air drying after a couple of days, so I threw them in the oven for 20 minutes to bake. They get brown underneath but not on top and they didn’t stick to the pan once baked.
This is what it looked like after it was finished baking
Step 6: Paint and decorate as you like. I like to let them paint with cue tips, then I do not have to worry about them damaging the few brushes we have while they are painting on this hard surface.
Step 7: Get excited about what you were able to create! **Warning** Mold will break when tossed! After this picture was taken, my son was so excited that he tossed his mold onto the table without thinking about it and it cracked. = (  He now knows to be careful!
So get going because REAL MOMS can DO-IT-THEMSELVES!

Thanks Michelle for this wonderful project!

Real Moms DIY: My Mirror Transformation!

For years…I have wanted to update my bathroom to have more of a classy look and feel. I just didn’t know where to start. Then I found Reflected Design! They specialize in custom frames for existing mirrors. They were just what my bathroom needed. Just a simple face lift for the mirror I already had.

The process was simple. I simply selected the frame style of my choice, supplied my measurements and information about my counter space, and they made my frame to custom fit my space. It arrived quickly and with clear instructions for installation. I simply laid the 4 frame pieces out on the floor. With the supplied wood glue, I glued the edges before screwing them together, then let it dry for 45 minutes before picking it up and taking it into my bathroom. I then proceeded to place it up with the top clips that they provided already on it, and made sure it would fit perfectly. Then I enlisted the help of the hubby and we applied the epoxy glue with the instructions provided. We help the mirror in place for 90 seconds and DONE!

Just take a look at what my vanity looked like before I started the transformation.

BEFORE:

Prepare to be amazed! Drum roll please………..

AFTER:

Isn’t the change amazing? Such a simple project, yet the results are incredible.

I highly recommend anyone who wants to update their already existing mirror to order from Reflected Design.

Real Moms DIY: How To Make Sidewalk Chalk

Today we are going to show you how to make your own sidewalk chalk. What a fun summer activity you can create with the kiddos and they will definitely love playing with it too!

How Does She? (Alison) is super creative and will show you how to do it below, and make sure you run over to her site and leave her a comment thanking her for this great tutorial!

What you will need:

  • Plaster of Paris
  • Wax paper
  • Cups
  • and some food coloring

I found the Plaster of Paris from Lowe’s after searching all of the craft stores.  It was around $7

Kind of a weird present huh?

I also gave them the cute cookie cutters, but that didn’t work so don’t worry about that part!

Mix a little of this and that!  Water with Plaster of Paris.  Creating a thick goo like the consistency of Peanut Butter.

Telling them they were mixing a magic potion sent beams of excitement through their souls!  They could hardly contain themselves for the unveiling of the final product! ( Yes, my daughter was still in her pajamas)

Mix and add food coloring.  I’ve heard tempera paint powder works too, but I couldn’t find any for the life of me!  I used what I had!

How to make sidewalk chalk

You know the heart molds from the melted crayon post last February?  Well, I wanted to use them again.  I like to make sure I get good use out of things I buy:)

How to make sidewalk chalk

Let them dry for a few hours and then pop them out!   We tried to get a little artsy and add green and darker blue to the chalk.

A dream come true with the magic potion…

Real Moms DIY: Hand Towel Tutorial

I am going to show you how to make a hand towel today:

KAMsnaps sells cute, high-quality and easy-to-use snaps, pliers, dies, and presses to suit so many of your crafting needs. KAMsnaps are great for making cloth diapers or for giving a new life to your old ones that used velcro. KAMsnaps are also great other projects, giving you an option besides velcro, button holes or zippers.

I received pliers and several designs and colors of plastic snaps  to try out. I really needed some hand towels for the kitchen and wanted the kind that tied to the oven or fridge handle so it wouldn’t constantly fall on the floor. I came across a pattern and tutorial here to attach some cotton fabric to a towel. But instead of using a button and buttonhole, I used KAMsnaps! I made two towels in an afternoon.

After the sewing portion was complete, I used the awl to poke a hole in my fabric.

I selected colors that would go nicely with my fabric. That was a tough decision because they were all so cute. I couldn’t resist the heart and the flower for my towels. I also took out a socket and stud for each towel, plus plain snaps for the back.

The video tutorial explained everything so clearly! It was easy to change the die that fit my snaps, and my snaps went on so easily (I did practice a few times on some scrap fabric).

Here’s what the front and back look like:

And the finished product in my kitchen (my mom has already stolen the orange one).

I have already washed the blue one several times and I’m happy to report that the KAMsnaps held up great. I’ll definitely be making more of these for myself and for gifts. And more for my mom, who has already asked me why she only gets one (along with her I-gave-you-LIFE look).

Check out all the other tutorials on the KAMsnaps website. There are so many things you can make using KAMsnaps. I think I’ll try making a wallet next. Did you know you could make a pull-up style cloth training pants? You can even resize diapers using KAMsnaps.

Real Moms DIY: Baby Shower Diaper Cake

Who wants cake at our baby shower? Well this will have to suffice.

Thanks to susiestampslot’s “Susan” she is going to show you how you can DIY, oh and it’s so easy and cute!

HOW TO MAKE A DIAPER CAKE, Part One, Cake part only
SUPPLIES NEEDED:

Diapers–Approx. 72-75 (I have only tried it with the Pampers Size 1 Swaddlers. I wanted them white with no pictures on the booty part.)
Rubber Bands (I liked the skinny ones as you don’t want them too tight)
Flat Base (I used a 12″ Wilton cardboard cake base)
15 oz. bottle of Baby Powder
4 oz. cheapy plastic Baby Bottle
Pop Up Glue dots

1. Start by rolling up about 10 of the diapers, front to back. You want them pretty tightly rolled so the whole cake will look uniform. Put a rubber band around the middle, but don’t make the rubber band so tight that it puckers. I did this flat on the table. When it gets to the center little “crotchy” area, it wants to stay folded here. I just let it and rolled in the fold as i went.

2. Place Baby Powder onto the middle of the Cake Base. Take about 9 of the rolled diapers and stand them up in a ring around the Baby Powder. It may take more or less diapers depending on what type of powder you purchased. That’s ok. Put a rubber band around this first ring so that it hugs the Powder.

3. Roll more diapers. Make a second ring around the first one using about 14-15 diapers. Secure the entire ring with a rubber band, making sure it does not pucker them. It will help it stand up straighter.

4. Roll more diapers. (See a pattern here? You could go ahead and roll more for the second and third layers if you like, but you don’t know exactly how many you will need.) Make a third ring around the second one using about 20-21 diapers. This last ring should be hitting the outskirts of the 12″ cake base. Secure with another rubber band. TIPS: When you roll the diapers, for some reason, a little of the colored picture from the front velcro area shows on one end and not the other. I preferred my outer rings, since they will be showing the most, to be completely white. Therefore, I made sure the white end was up before securing an entire ring with the rubber band. I also made sure the ends of the rolls were all to the inside of the cake for each layer, so it would not be sloppy on the outer edge where the paper bands would be.

5. Take a couple of the pop up glue dots and adhere the Baby Bottle to the top of the Baby Powder. Part of the Baby Powder should still be sticking up, acting as a center for the next layer as well as part of the Baby Bottle.

6. Roll more diapers if you didn’t already. Make your first ring on the second layer around the Baby Powder/Baby Bottle, using about 8-9 diapers and secure with a rubber band.

7. Roll more diapers. Make the second ring on the second layer, using about 14-15 diapers. Again white end up and rolled ends to inside ring for neatness. (it counts!)

8. Roll about 7 more diapers for the final top layer of the cake. Place them around the last bit of showing Baby Bottle. The diapers will be a bit taller than it, but that’s ok, as you will put a cute little topper on it and it won’t show. Secure the last ring with a last rubber band, again white end up and rolled ends to the middle so they don’t show on the outside.

You are DONE!! That whole process should only take about an hour, if that.

Now you can head over here and see part 2: how to decorate it!
