It’s Okay to be Different and Silly! {My Purple Toes Book Review}

cover Thanks to the Family Review Network, I got to review the book My Purple Toes by Blair Hahn. This book was written by a dad whose daughter asked him to go to the salon with her….to get pedicures! He obliged and came home with purple toes! This book is based on the reactions from passerby’s and family members when they spotted his unusually colorful toes.

My girls and I have had a lot of fun reading this book! They love finding the Dad’s purple toes and counting them, and they also enjoy finding the purple-toed frog who peeks around corners on each page. Lots of giggles and clapping and read-it-again-Mama…I don’t mind because this book is such a delight to read. I also love the illustrations, which are so lighthearted and make me smileuntitled every time.

But it’s not all silliness…between the giggles, you’ll be teaching your child about acceptance of others, that being different is okay, and just to have fun in your life. Those Purple Toes…they’re powerful!

soleslogoWhat makes it even better is that with every purchase of My Purple Toes, a significant  portion of its proceeds are donated to benefit children in the United States and around the world through nonprofit, Soles4Souls, which collects and distributes shoes at no cost to people in need.

My Purple Toes is geared towards kids under 8 years old and can be purchased online for $10.99. Be sure to check out the My Purple Toes Facebook and Twitter pages, and sign up for their newsletter. And look for their second book, My Purple Kisses in time for Valentine’s Day 2011.

Earth-Friendly Learning and Fun {innovativeKids Review}

InnovativeKidsLogo innovativeKids celebrates its 10th birthday and continues its mission of bringing the best of fun and learning to children around the world. Recently innovativeKids launched a series of eco-friendly toys called green start™. Designed for ages 18 months to 6 years old, the green start™ series is designed to help give very young children an awareness of the natural world and an understanding of how people are interconnected with everything around them. innovativeKids believes that by giving preschoolers a green start, it will be that much easier for them to incorporate environmentally friendly practices into their everyday lives as they grow.

greenstart

I am always looking for more earth-friendly children’s items and was happy to review some green start™ products. We received the Puppy Palooza Giant Floor Puzzle, the Numbers in Nature Book & Game Set, and the Little Polar Bear Storybook and Plush Box set. I immediately fell in love with the adorable illustrations! My girls were eager to start playing with them as well…little did they know they were learning about numbers and the environment! These have   quickly become my girls’ favorites.

The packaging of these products was beautiful as well as recyclable. I was also impressed that the memory cards in the Numbers in Nature Book and Game Set were so durable. As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, my girls can be rough on their toys! I am confident that all of these books, toys, and games will withstand even them. And I love the convenience of their boxed gift sets! green start™ products are available at Barnes & Noble and Borders, as well as Amazon and the innovativeKids website.

It’s not surprising at all that innovativeKids has received all of these awards: Dr. Toy, Creative Child, iParenting Media Awards, Independent Publisher Book Awards, New
York Book Show Awards, Parents’ Choice Awards, The Lion & Lamb Project, Mom’s Choice Awards, NAPPA and named a 2007 Working Mother Best Small Company by Working Mother Magazine.

For Your Prima Ballerina! {Prima Princessa Book Review}

PrimaPrincessaBook Prima Princessa’s Ballet for Beginners: Featuring the School of American Ballet by Mary Kate Mellow and Stephanie Troeller and  is a lovely book to introduce your children to ballet basics.

My girls love dancing and twirling around, and as a former dancer myself, it warms my heart! They are just 3 years old, but they already love this book. Prima Princessa is a cartoon character who floats alongside the actual ballerina, and she really caught their attention. So for now they’re just ooohhh-ing and ahhhh-ing over the pretty pictures, but this book will definitely be useful as they get older and if they wish, start taking classes. From basic positions to more advanced moves, all are demonstrated very clearly by dancers from The School of American Ballet (the offical school of The New York City Ballet). Younger students as well as older ones are pictured so that all ages can relate.

PrimaPrincessLogo

This book also covers many facets of ballet class at all levels, such as creative movement, ballet class etiquette (very important…I got in trouble for wearing my big Swatch watch during class!), and what happens in advanced ballet class. Even the pas de deux is described, which my girls called “Mama Dada ballet.”

It was a great refresher for me too, as I haven’t taken a class in years. Now all of the arm, leg and foot positions are coming back to me. And if you’ve never taken a class before, this would serve as a great introduction to you too. You could help with practice at home, or when your little dancer tells you about class that day, you’ll know what he or she is talking about!

Prima Princesssa, kids ballet DVDs

Visit the Prima Princessa website for more resources, including DVDs, recommended ballet schools and camps, a ballet dictionary, where to buy a tutu, free coloring pages, and more. Also, check out their blog, Tutuzone! You can purchase the Prima Princessa book from the Prima Princessa website, or from Amazon.

Read, Explore, Imagine {Barefoot Books Review}

BarefootBooks Barefoot Books is “a world-wide community of writers, artists, storytellers, musicians, and others who are committed to providing timeless stories and captivating art that can help children become happy, engaged members of a global society.” Two moms started Barefoot Books to encourage children and families explore, imagine, create, connect, and give back. Through their beautifully illustrated books and creative stories, Barefoot Books promotes an increased awareness of nature and diversity, and simply lets your child’s imagination run wild!

Barefoot Books sent us some of their books to review. Here’s what we had to say!

Bear-on-a-Bike_HC_W ITookTheMoonForAWalk_HC_W_3

We just love books at our house. He absolutely loves it when his daddy or I read to him. His Holliefavorites have to be the “Bear” collection. I love these books because of their hard cover.  They are pretty much baby proof, so he is free to read them whenever and wherever he wants and I  don’t have to worry about him ripping pages, etc. This time he received Bear on a Bike and Bear at Work. Through reading these books he has learned to say “bear”. It is so cute and so precious. His eyes light up each and every time I read to him. We also received two books that I reserve for special reading times like bedtime and mommy & baby time: I Took the Moon for a Walk and Up,Up,Up. These are hardcover books put their pages are more delicate and I would not want him to rip them. I highly recommend these two books for any mommy to read to her babies. I believe reading is such an important step in a child’s development. I highly recommend you check out Barefoot Books and purchase your own today!

AlligatorAlphabet_BB_W CleosCountingBook_PB_W_2 IDreamtIWasADinosaur_BB_W

We were thrilled to receive three wonderful books from Barefoot Books. Ava is really into Amanda dinosaurs, so we were happy I Dreamt I was a Dinosaur was included in the bunch! She loves reading this book before bed each night, the illustrations are so pretty and she likes to name all the dinosaurs as we read. We also received Cleo’s Counting Book by Caroline Mockford and Alligator Alphabet by Stella Blackstone and Stephanie Bauer. Ava’s third birthday is next week and we have been working on recognizing letters and numbers and counting. These books have been wonderful teaching tools, and she is having so much fun learning while we read and spend time together. Even Hollis sits with us when we read, I know he is learning so much during this time, too. All of these books are board books, so if my 10 month old son gets a hold of one, I don’t have to worry about it getting ruined. Maybe slobbered on a little, but no torn pages! Barefoot Books is full of fun and educational stories your children will love! Children love being read to, they learn so much by simply reading a story with mom & dad.

Storytime_PBwCD_W_3 WereRoamingInTheRainforest

My girls were so excited when I gave them their two new Barefoot Books. One look at the Stephanie colorful front covers and they wanted to sit down and read. And now that they are a little bit older, they are more willing to sit and listen as we read books with more text to them. In Storytime: First Tales for Sharing by Stella Blackstone and Anne Wilson, I was delighted to read them classic stories such as “The Three Little Pigs” and “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”. The illustrations were beautiful and presented these old stories in a modern way. And after we read We’re Roaming in the Rainforest by Laurie Krebs and Anne Wilson, they couldn’t stop talking about the jungle! They ran around, making animal noises and pretended to be surrounded by trees. Barefoot Books stir the imagination, encourage family time, and are so much fun to read!

In a nutshell, we and our kiddos LOVED our Barefoot Books!

Summertime Learning {Stepping Stones Together Review}

imageDuring the summer, children can forget as much as 40% of what they learned during the school year.  A child in pre-school to second grade is learning so many basic skills that forgetting what they learned could potentially set them up for struggles in the next school year.

This summer, help your child stay on top by introducing them to Stepping Stones Together.  Stepping Stones Together is a program designed for parents to help their child with basic reading skills.  Dr. Erika Burton founded Stepping Stones Together to provide parents with an easy-to-use and reasonably priced online beginning reading program to help parents instill a love for reading with children ages 3-7.  The idea is to empower busy parents with the tools to take an active role in their child’s beginning reading skills, foster a love of reading, and provide a positive bonding experience for even the time challenged parents!

image

In just 15-20 minutes a day, you and your child can spend time together improving reading skills.  Have your child select one of the pre-selected stories.  Spend time trying to guess what the story will be about, looking at pictures, reading the book, and answering questions.  Print of a certificate to showcase each level completion.

It is very affordable.  The program is $19.99 for the 90 day program .  There is also a full year program for $39.99.  It offers high interest text (superheroes, sports, transportation, animals, princesses, fairies), repetitive syntax, helps develop print awareness, and utilizes all 220 high frequency words and more that 200 vocabulary words inclusive of the 95 most common nouns in children books.  This personalized beginner reading program consists of stories, questions, games, and incentive chart…just to name a few.

image

This is such a great way to either help your child begin reading as a way of preparing them for school or as a way to help your child stay up and improve the skills they just recently learned.  Not to mention the wonderful parent and child time that will take place during this program.

While looking through the books I noticed one in particular…

imageHEY!  That cat has a great name ;)

The Stepping Stones Together program is a wonderful way for families to engage in literacy activities at home. This program encompasses all of the vital components of literacy. Children not only have an opportunity to practice reading and writing skills, but comprehension strategies are embedded within each story, thus preparing children for classroom learning. Equally as important, the books are created with high-interest content, which will help ignite an excitement for reading at an early age. The Stepping Stones Together program is an effective tool to make literacy fun and rewarding.
Jennifer, First grade teacher, Glencoe, IL

Here are some important facts to consider:

–Parents are a child’s first teacher.
–Learning to read at home is associated with a more positive attitude, improved self-concept, and positive relationship with parents, teachers, and school.
–A child’s literacy scores are positively correlated to parent involvement.
–Parent involvement in reading leads to greater reading motivation and academic achievement.
–The amount a child reads is a strong predictor of their academic success.

If you are looking for a fun and educational tool for your child to have this summer, check out Stepping Stones Together.  Not only will their beginner reading skills improve but so will your relationship with them.  How does that phrase go?  A family that reads together, stays together.  Yeah…that sounds right!image

Curl Up With Some Great Books {Debbie Macomber Giveaway} CLOSED

DebbieMacomber_HannahsList I love reading! I wish I had more time to sit down with a cup of tea and get lost in a novel, but with two little ones I haven’t had the chance lately.

However I couldn’t resist Hannah’s List, by Debbie Macomber. I had read good things about her books so I carved out some time, and yes poured myself some tea. Unfortunately the tea went cold and I could only read a few pages here and there (so much for my carved out time!). But I eventually got through it and as I expected, I loved the book.

I don’t want to give away too many details or surprises, but Hannah’s List starts out one year after a widower’s loss of his wife (Hannah) from cancer. She knows him so well that when she dies, she knows he will not be able to stop wallowing in his grief. So when she comes to terms that she will die soon, she writes him a letter to encourage him to stop dwelling on the past and mourning her, because he has so much of his life left. He wasn’t to read it until one year after her death. One regret is that they could not have children, so she includes a list in the letter. What’s on the list? I think you’ll like it more if I let you read the book and find out for yourself! But the book goes on to tell us about how he tries to fulfill his wife’s wishes and the lives with which he intersects in the process.

Hannah’s List is an easy read, however, it does address serious topics like the loss of a spouse, something I cannot even imagine. But the book got me thinking about how much do I really love my husband and what would I do in a similar situation. I like it when books make me reflect upon my own life.

shoponblossomstreethbI received other titles by Debbie Macomber and I can’t wait to read them all. One I’m looking  forward to reading is The Shop on Blossom Street, about a yarn shop owner who teaches a baby blanket knitting class to three strangers. Debbie Macomber is a crafter herself, as am I. What is great about crafting is that working with your hands, teaching one another and a shared goal of creating something lovely can bring people of different backgrounds and personalities together. I can’t wait to find out the stories behind these four knitters. So that one is definitely next on my list of reads!

Books Galore! {Glitterati Review}

Books should be a staple in every household.  It is so important to read to your kids, but also to make time for yourself and enjoy a good book.  Books take us to a world where only we can be.

Anyone who says they have only one life to live must not know how to read a book.  ~Author Unknown

Books create memories.  Some of my favorite childhood memories are my mother tucking me into bed at night and reading a story to me.  She has the best voices for characters!  I also remember when I found that book that I just couldn’t put down until it was over.  I remember times when I cried until I couldn’t see the words and even laughed out loud while on a cardio machine at the gym.  I love reading!

TV.  If kids are entertained by two letters, imagine the fun they’ll have with twenty-six.  Open your child’s imagination.  Open a book.  ~Author Unknown

Glitterati Incorporated

Glitterati Incorporated is an intellectual property producer and publisher for books, ancillary gift products, and electronic media.  They primarily produce illustrated books for for adults and children at a wonderfully high quality.  Some of their well known products include: the Peanuts publishing program, the bestselling Spice Girls’ In Your Pocket series, the deluxe edition of Fleur Cowles’ The Best of Flair, or Douglas Kirkland’s extraordinary photo essay, "Coco Chanel: Three Weeks/1962."  Their books can be found in markets and stores domestically and abroad.

Glitterati generously, VERY GENEROUSLY, gave books to Hollie, Stephanie, and I!  We were able to pick some amazing books to review.  We all loved them!  Here is what we received:

When I received my envelope full of books I was so excited!  It was like Christmas opening this package.  First, I received “American Portraits” by Michael Clinton.  This is a wonderful book full of portraits of Americans.  This includes people from 100 different countries.  These diverse faces and their stories help remind us of what it means to be an American.  I received another book by Michael Clinton called, “Global Snaps.”  In this book, Clinton displays 500 pictures from all global7 continents.   This is a perfect way to see the globe when you aren’t lucky enough to experience it first hand.  It is also a great way to teach children about different parts of the world.  Both books by Clinton have stunning photographs!  I also received a book of poems inspired by 9/11 called, “Healing Light: Thirty Messages of Love, Hope, and Courage.”  The book, says its author Alexandra Villard de Borchgrave, is "for all those who strive to overcome the adversity of life and who seek comfort, joy, strength…to meet the challenges of today."  Everyone should read this so we never forget those who passed and families who were effected during such a horrendous attack on the US.  Lastly, I received two great books for wives.  First, “PMAT: The Perfect Marriage Aptitude Test” by Mary T. Carty.  Inside you will find 100 multiple-choice questions to gauge both partners responses to everyday predicaments.  Carty then gives advice on how to deal with these situations.  This is a great self help book to help any couple get over the little things and make married life the best it can be.  It makes for interesting conversation between you and your spouse, try it if you don’t believe me.  The last book I received was, “Wife Dressings: The Fine Art of Being a Well-Dressed Wife” by Anne Fogarty.  I know this my sound like an old fashion book but it has awesome advice!  It is actually a reprint of a 50 year old book and although parts may be humorous a lot of it is practical and helpful.  I don’t know about any other women out there but I would LOVE to live in the 1950s.  Those were the days when wives always looked their best and vacuumed wearing high heels.  I know some of you may be rolling your eyes, but honestly I would love to be this type of wife.  One of my favorite quotes from this book is to the men in our lives. If you adore her you must adorn her.  There lies the essence of a happy marriage.  Use THAT on your hubbies :)   Thank you Glitterati for sending me such a wonderful library of books.  They are so great…in fact, I had to convince my husband that these were books are mine and would stay in the house and no, he couldn’t take them to work to show off to others.  He was just as excited Crissato receive them as I was.  Especially American Portraits…he is so patriotic!  Thanks again Glitterati!

I was very excited when my envelope of books arrived from Glitterati. We love books in ourcarc[1] home so these were a pleasant surprise. The first book "Carchitecture" by Fredric Winkowski and  Frank D. Sullivan. It is definitely my hubby’s favorite. It is a very nice coffee table book (well when my little one is old enough to not rip out the pages). It features frames, fenders, and fins of cars through history with over 500 photographs. The photographs are amazing, and there is so much history just to be seen in these pictures. The second book we received was Sandra Magsamen "The Gift". A wonderful pop up book that my henley[1]son loves having me read to him every night. It is a moving tale that tells the story of an anonymous gift and how it is passed along. I won’t share the whole book but it is a definite  must-have book for your family. The third book "Henley" by Julie Muszynksi is a New York City Tail! Follows a glamorous entering life of an adorable black and white Japanese Chin. Life lessons is what everybody[1]the end of this book covers. My son loves dogs so this book was a hit for the pictures alone. The fourth book we received was "Everybody Eats Lunch" by Cricket Azima. It is a fun  cookbook perfect for kids! It showcases friends around the world and what they eat for lunch. I love this book. It opens the door to other cultures and best of all their lunch recipes with each recipe kid tested and approved. It also features fun food-shaped puzzles pieces Holliethat are a lot of fun with the kids. Thanks Glitterati for the wonderful books. They will definitely be used for years and year to come.

In the 10th grade I almost decided to be a fashion designer when I grew up. Alas it didn’t happen, so now fashion and sewing are more like hobbies. When I received the list of books Glitterati_Steph2[1] from Glitterati, I immediately knew what books I wanted: T-Shirt Makeovers: 20 Transformations for Fabulous Fashions, and Coco Chanel: Three Weeks 1962. T-Shirt Makeovers by Sistahs of Harlem (Carmia Marshall and Carmen Webber) is full of ideas to transform your t-shirts, from that cherished one from a memorable concert, to that blah one that you never wear. Included are step-by-step instructions and diagrams for all 20 styles inspired by hip-hop fashion, plus basic information on sewing and styling tips. You’ll be inspired to take their designs and create something of your own…I’ve already got a bunch of ideas buzzing through my head for my own as well as my girls’ t-shirts! CocoGlitterati_Steph1[1] Chanel: Three Weeks 1962 by Douglas Kirkland gives us a little peek into the world of this amazing woman. In 1962, Kirkland was assigned by Look Magazine to photograph and report on three weeks of  Chanel’s day-to-day activities. He gained her trust and what resulted was this inspiring look into her life. He covered not just how she designs clothes and runs a fashion show, but he also captured her independent spirit, giving us insight to her personality and philosophies on fashion and on life. I love both of these books…you may think they are from opposite sides of the style spectrum, but one of Stephaniemany things they have in common is they inspire you to be more creative, bold, and different!

Turn off the television, grab a great book, and dive in!  Next time you are book hunting, keep your eyes peeled for book published by Glitterati Incorporated.  You won’t be disappointed.  Pinky swear!

{Opinions expressed in this post are strictly our own. We were not paid for this post. Thanks Glitterati for sending us these great books for this review.}

CountingCockatoos_HC_W As a kindergarten teacher I know first hand how important it is that children are read to from the day they are born and how much a single story can mean to a child. A whole new world is opened up for children when they hear stories and even more when they learn to read themselves and it is amazing to see! I am a book lover and collector, especially children’s books. I have passed this love onto my children. I started reading to Ava and Hollis before they were even born and they are both growing in their love for books, especially Ava. She is constantly sitting at her book basket looking through her books “reading”. It’s so cute to watch. I love reading to her, it’s such special time. She is not a cuddler by YouAndMe_LB_W_2 nature, but if we are reading a story she just climbs right up and snuggles in your lap ready to listen to every word! Barefook Books generously sent four books to our family: You and Me, Counting Cockatoos, I Spy the Sun in the Sky, & Animal Boogie! I can’t even begin to tell you how much fun we have had with these books and how many special moments they have already given us with our children. Ava was immediately drawn to Counting Cockatoos. With it’s bright and colorful illustrations along with the fun jungle animals, it was an instant favorite! Animal Boogie with it’s CD is also a huge hit with her! Each of these books is beautifully illustrated and wonderfully written. They are also board books, which are perfect for her age. Barefoot Books has a children’s crafts and activities page on their website with several fun activities to go along with their books! Such a fun way to extend the learning from the stories even further! Books make such wonderful gifts for children and Barefoot Books offers a wide variety of them along with other learning tools for all different ages. . You are sure to find what you need for your children and will not be disappointed!

I Love that Barefoot Books Specifies their Core Values:

Imagine
We offer books that are an authentic alternative to the commercialization of childhood. We encourage children to make time for make-believe, let their imaginations run wild and free, while never forgetting that childhood is a time for fun.

Explore

We help children explore other cultures, our planet, and themselves, providing them with ways to follow their imaginations on extraordinary journeys, both inner and outer.

Create

We believe that books with beautiful art and meaningful stories respect the innate wisdom of children and have the power to nourish the creative spark in everyone.

Connect

We are committed to using story to create deep and lasting connections—whether it’s a child and parent connecting over a book; a child connecting to the universal wisdom of other cultures; or a broad network of people connecting through shared values and the desire to help children become happy, engaged members of a global community.

Give Back

We support organizations that share our goals of global understanding, empowering children through art and story, and protecting and preserving the earth for future generations.

~Barefoot Books

Stephanie and Hollie also received books from Barefoot Books and here is what they thought of them:

I received four beautiful books from Barefoot Books to review: The Gigantic Turnip by Aleksei Tolstoy and Niamh Sharkey; Knick Knack Paddy Whack by SteveSongs and Christiane Engel ; Counting Cockatoos by Stella Blackstone and Stephanie Bauer; and You and Me by Giovanni Manna. Each book was different – The Gigantic Turnip was a story book, Knick Knack Paddy Whack was a song book, Counting Cockatoos was all about counting, and You and Me illustrated the concept of opposites. But what all of these books had in common was that they were all so beautifully illustrated and my girls love all four of them! I wish I could hang up the pages on the walls of their room. They ask me to read these books over and over again throughout the day, and I find them in different rooms of the house as they look at them on their own. These books will be among their favorites for a long time. I will definitely be giving these books out as gifts to my friends with little ones! Stephanie

Barefoot books sent my little one 3 wonderful books. When they arrived he was very excited as he {hearts} books. He loves to sit and look at the pictures and I am so impressed at how long they keep him occupied. He received Bear in a square, Bear in town, and Cleo’s counting book. They are the nice hard books that he can’t destroy at his young age of 1. I absolutely love how sturdy they are! They are sure to last unlike other books he has torn the pages out of. His favorite is Bear in a square. Every night before we go to bed he finds his book and brings it to mom or dad and we read it to him. He has learned to say “Bear” by listening to us over the last few weeks. Such a milestone and he has made mom and dad so proud. We love our barefoot books, they are perfect for our little one. Zhen bang! It’s Mandy and Pandy! {Mandy and Pandy Book Giveaway} CLOSED

MandyandPandy

Even though I’m Chinese, I don’t understand much of the language, I speak even less, and I can read barely anything (insert my grandmother’s disappointed frown here). It may be too late for me…but my girls are at that age where they pick up other languages just-like-that. They know a little bit of Cantonese, Mandarin, and Spanish from TV and from what we’ve tried to sprinkle in here and there. They’ve started using words here and there in conversation and can also count. I’d love to cultivate this!

MandyPandyVisitChinaMandy and Pandy books teach kids Chinese in a fun and easy way, using simplified Chinese to teach kids Pre-K to 3rd grade. There are four books in the series of books, all of which engage youngsters with Mandy and Pandy’s fun adventures and cute and colorful illustrations, all while introducing them to Chinese language.

We received two Mandy and Pandy books for this review. We’ve MandyPandyPlaySportsenjoyed learning about Chinese culture in Mandy and Pandy Visit China, which introduces all the famous sights in China, including the Great Wall and the Forbidden City. Mandy and Pandy Play Sports talks about their favorite sports and why they like them. Mandy does a cartwheel and Pandy cheers her on, and they also watch a friend do a slam dunk. Zhen bang! That means “Awesome!” by the way!

Each line in the books is shown in English, Simplified Chinese characters and Pinyin (i.e. how you “sound out” the characters). And each book comes with an audio CD in English and Mandarin to help you out, whether or not you know any Chinese yourself. Mandy and Pandy books are a great way to introduce your kiddos to a new language while having fun with these two adorable characters.
