Brr.. It’s getting Cold Outside! Should Children Play Outside in Cold Weather?

Winter is around the corner! For children, it is that dreaded time of the year when there are almost always bundled indoors. Rain or shine, winter or summer, children should be allowed to have a ball at playtime! Why? ‘Coz — “Play is the only way the highest intelligence of humankind can unfold.” – Joseph Chilton Pearce

It might get a little chilly out on the playgrounds in Brisbane during winter, but do not let that mar the children’s happiness. The perks of playing out in the cold, outweigh the disadvantages heavily.  While the children play, little would they know that they are gaining other stuff too! Interested to know how? Read on!

Why Let the Children Out to the Playgrounds in Winter?

If you are feeling skeptical about letting the children out to play, especially when the weather is a little chilly, then you need to look at the perks of using the playground, even during the winters. Here are some of them:

  • Daily Dosage of Vitamin D:

Vitamin D is essential to all, kids and adults. Sunlight is the best source for this Vitamin! It is crucial to calcium regulation, and hence, plays an important role in building stronger bones and teeth. When you inhibit children from playing outside, you are also eliminating the chance of better Vitamin D absorption.

In summers, the sun is stronger and hence your child gets enough vitamin D, perhaps by just walking to and from the school. Winter has a weaker sun, and hence, the daily dosage of vitamin D is minimized. The only way to get maximum vitamin D is by allowing the kids to play outside on the playground.

  • Extra Energy Burn Off:

The energy content of children is much higher than that of adults. You need to ensure that it is burned off naturally in a healthy way. What better place than the playground? When the excess energy is burned off naturally, the children can sleep better and focus better on their studies.

If you keep them indoors, and they do not get a chance to burn off this excess energy, you are making a huge mistake. Without a chance to burn off the energy, they will seem unsettled and difficult to control. Let them out to play, and you will find the children cheerful and happy! To top it all, which parent doesn’t want to see droopy eyes at bedtime (Aah!! Think of those ‘me-time’ or ‘couple-time’ at the end of the day)!

  • Maintain a Healthy Weight & Lifestyle:

Outdoor playgrounds give the children freedom and more space. Hence, they get a chance to run around. When they have a playground, the children also have the equipment to play around, which ultimately helps build better muscles and higher fitness level. An active lifestyle is essential for a healthy BMI (Body Mass Index). Allow the children to play in playgrounds and you will be helping them stay healthy, even when, they get older.

What is the Best Place to Enjoy the Perks of Playgrounds during Winter Season?

It is a win-win situation for all. Teachers get obedient and focussed students, while parents get happy and healthy children. It is a win-win situation for the kids as well, they get to socialize, and build stronger friendships and personality.  “It is paradoxical that many educators and parents still differentiate between a time for learning and a time for play without seeing the vital connection between them.” -Leo F. Buscaglia – don’t be one of them!
